Acoustic fields in 3D

Intense ultrasound in gas can act as an optical element for high-power lasers without being damaged by them, but only if the sound field can be reconstructed. During a summer studentship in the SonoPhotonics group at DESY in Hamburg, I co-developed the step of a PyTorch reconstruction framework, building on Schrödel et al. (Nature Photonics, 2024), from 2D to full 3D. Moving the simulation from NumPy on the CPU to PyTorch on the GPU, at 128³ × 512 spatial-temporal resolution, cut the large runs from hours to minutes.

A mock newspaper front page, 'Breaking News: Summer students evaporating at DESY', joking that summer students vanish into the HERA accelerator and the lasers, with a silhouette running through a dark accelerator tunnel and a magenta laser spot on black.
Wojciech taking a selfie in an accelerator tunnel at DESY, the yellow and red magnets of the beam line running into the distance along the curved concrete wall.
A cut-open accelerator magnet on display in a hall at DESY, its yellow coil and layered steel rings visible behind a clear cover.
A tall clear cylinder filled with dark blue balls and a few white ones, on a white plinth in a hall of yellow steel ladders at DESY.
A lab door at DESY with a yellow warning sign in German for class 4 laser radiation, and a note giving up to 800 mW at 1030 nm.
